It all started in a garage, but not just any garage, this garage was a garage of hopes and dreams. Well, hopes, dreams and towels to be more specific. Myself and a good friend started screen-printing on beach towels, back in 1985. Armed with our product line consisting of beach chairs, accessories and of course our custom screen-printed and colored blank towels we made the rounds to our local surf shops. Soon after we had opened a few accounts, and with luck on our side our little business started to grow. We called ourselves
By 1995 we decided to start weaving the towels from scratch, and we purchased 2 dobby towel looms with Jacquard heads. The Computer guided electronic Jaquard head was a fairly recent creation in the world of textiles, and we were determined to get in on the ground floor. This new technology allowed us to not only weave the towels from scratch, but to actually weave the clients logo into the towel. Far superior to screen-printing, the image on a custom woven towel will not fade, will not wash out, and will leave an indelible image, on a product that will last a lifetime. Weaving our own towels meant we were a textile mill, so we wanted to change our name to represent our pride, enthusiasm and our ability to weave a high quality, luxurious product. That was when the Pinecrest Mills name was born. Conjuring the feeling of old world elegance, coupled with the descriptive tag Mill, we felt this was a natural combination, that fit well with our ability to weave not only beach towels, but also several new sizes, that we aimed to use to take on our next frontier: the golf market!
As the end of the 1990’s was drawing near, we at Pinecrest Mills were expanding, growing and in need of more looms, and more people! With the addition of two more looms, full production crews and an inventive art department, Pinecrest Mills started to take on more and more market share in the golf towel industry. Always the feisty upstart, Pinecrest Mills wove it’s product from the fun and sun of the west coast, ignoring the almost industry standard of weaving from the
It turns out change was right across the border. Only 40 minutes from the old facility/office, this new factory was state of the art, with more room to grow and the means to double capacity. While rocky at first, (as moving delicate forty foot tall towel looms tends to be) there were a fair share of hiccups, but soon after; we had expanded our sales team once again and were now making international shipments to
